On Friday, July 3, 2026, work resumed on the iconography of the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in the city of Jeonju, picking up where it had left off in August 2023, when the dome and the apse of the Holy Sanctuary had been completed.
Professor-Iconographer Mr. Sozos Giannoudes, together with a team of seven iconographers from Greece and fifteen volunteer assistants from Korea and Taiwan, are working intensively with the goal of completing, by July 31st, the painting of twenty-three large compositions — ten Prophets (in the “From on High the Prophets” scene) and twelve Apostles in bust form — as well as twenty full-length figures of Saints.
This undertaking is a true feat, given that most of the compositions are large and include numerous figures. Yet their systematic and lengthy workday — Monday through Saturday, from 9 in the morning until 8 in the evening — combined with their fervent zeal and love for the Church in Korea, can make this feat a reality, as Mr. Giannoudes and his team have demonstrated in the past through the iconography of many churches of the Orthodox Metropolis of Korea.
The parish priest, Fr. Hilarion Jeong, his presbytera Despina Lee, and many members of the parish have taken on a great share of responsibility and assistance, seeing to the daily needs of those working on the iconography — providing meals, accommodation, and whatever else may be required.
The prayer and hope of all is that the Lord, through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, may grant health and strength to the members of the team, so that they may joyfully reach the desired completion.
