Event for Reconciliation and Reunification on the Korean Peninsula

On Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 3 p.m. in Seoul, the National Conference of Churches in Korea (NCCK) organized a major event in support of reconciliation and reunification of North and South Korea. During the event, the Metropolitan of Korea Ambrosios, as the president of the NCCK, delivered the opening address, while the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, presented the keynote speech.

The Metropolitan of Korea stated the following:

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Today, we have gathered in this communal prayer to ask the Triune God to fulfill our common vision about the reunification of North and South Korea. This is about the reunification of two parts of a nation that share the same history, language, and culture, yet remain divided for over seventy years.

Reunification is not merely a political or geographical matter but a profoundly sacred mission that touches the hearts of millions. The Korean Peninsula, once whole, was divided by the forces of history and ideology. Yet, this division could never erase the shared identity of the Korean people. The families torn apart, the friendships interrupted, and the dreams deferred serve as a reminder that reunification is more than the removal of a border; it is the restoration of peace, justice, and love.

To achieve reunification, we need dialogue, patience, and mutual understanding. Dialogue between the two sides, even on the most challenging issues, is the first step toward building trust, bringing people closer not only physically but, more importantly, spiritually.

Reunification also requires a struggle to become a vision and mission for the younger generations. The youth of North and South Korea must learn to see each other as brothers and sisters, not strangers. Through education and the cultivation of a Christian theology of peace and unity, we can build a future where the Korean Peninsula is once again united, not only in geography but also in the hearts of the people.

Let us unite to support the vision of reunification, with respect for history and hope for the future. May North and South Korea, with God’s help and our personal efforts, become one nation again, a society where harmony, justice, and kinship prevail.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you” (2 Cor. 13:11). Amen!
